Kobe Wellbeing Tonkatsu

(Black Bean Katsu, picture from the internet)

Yesterday was my day off, and so I dragged The Boyfriend with me to the mall. It was a nice day, so we walked.

After considerable walking to the mall, and inside the mall, we (or rather, I) got hungry. The problem is that the food court is rather... lacking. We decided to head across the street to another food court, one located inside H Mart.

Kobe Wellbeing Kotatsu, despite having a Japanese name and serving Japanese food, has a menu covered in Korean with a little English here or there. always find this ironic, but the quality of food is very good.

I tried the sweet potato stuffed tonkatsu. I believe they cook the sweet potato, grind it into a paste, and sandwich it inbetween two thin layers of pork before breading and deep frying. A word of warning, even if the meat seems cool enough, the potato will still be molten lava.

It was very delicious, but super filling (even more than regular katsu). It also came with miso, a green salad, rice and pickled daikon two ways (yellow pickled, and kimchi pickled). They always put a spoon in the miso, which I understood should be slurped- excuse me, sipped from the bowl while using your chop sticks to push the goodies (tofu, green onion) from the bowl into your mouth.

The Boyfriend ordered a katsu burger with a side of fries. The fries were thick cut, and didn't deflate in thirty seconds, but over all were just fries. The sandwich came on a bun with lettuce and tomato and katsu sauce. I imagine it would have been better if they had served it with shredded cabbage instead of lettuce.

All in all, it's moderately priced, fun and good for when you want some fast food Japanese. It's a place we'll habit.

Soft shelled crabs, why did you grow such a delicious exoskeleton?

I went to a restaurant in Seattle (on the previous trip no less) and visited a restaurant called "Best Wok". Who could drive by such a provokingly named restaurant?

The wait staff was quite excellent, pulling out my (the lady's) chair, but not The Boyfriend's chair. They even brought out complimentary jello, which seemed a little out of place for a Chinese restaurant. I decided that it was quite all right for an American Chinese restaurant though, and had no trouble scarfing down the jiggling, red flavored desert.

I ordered the soft shelled crab with black bean sauce. That sauce was equally as good or better than the crab and the crab was no slouch either. This was my first time eating soft shelled crab, and I have to admit that its shell reminded me of the shell one might find on a shrimp. If it had not been breaded and deep fried I might have tried to shell it there and then on the table. I figure it probably added calcium or something else vital found in bone like substances. It was nicely crunchy.

Michael got the orange chicken, which was also excellent. It came with a couple slices of orange on the side. The oranges were also very good.

So, while I found the place not very authentic, I enjoyed eating strange sea creatures and well picked orange slices. Plus, how often do I get to eat jello in little parfait glasses?

The Road House

Tonight was my friend Matt's birthday dinner, so a bunch of his friends got together and had dinner at The Road House which is in a building that was built for the Red Robin corporation and serves food of the same kind of menu a Red Robin would serve. I had an open face sandwich with chicken, pesto, and deep fried artichoke hearts. I think the sandwich would have been much better if they hadn't deep fried the artichokes, because the breading was so salty. The Boyfriend and I shared some potato skins which were pretty tasty, if a little over done. To be fair to the kitchen staff, there were like twenty of us and they got our food out pretty quickly, all things considered.

I noticed the waitress squat down to take our orders and I remembered a statistic on www.graphporn.com (a totally safe for work website) that said that servers often get a bigger tip if they squat. I kind of wonder why that is. Do they look like they're working harder if they squat? Are they removing a sense of authority (and therefore emotional distance) by "coming down to our level"? I'm probably over thinking this, and if most servers know they get bigger tips by doing it they probably do it with no other intention or thought about it.

Anyway, I have to be at work at six tomorrow, so I'll sign off here.
